Augusta by the Numbers: The Stats That Matter Most at the Masters
Not all golf stats are created equal at Augusta. We break down the specific statistics that most accurately predict Masters performance.
Augusta is unlike any other golf course in the world. The fairways are wide. The rough is minimal. And yet the Masters produces one of the most demanding week-to-week performances in all of sports. Why? Because Augusta punishes errors not through rough or tight fairways - but through severe slopes, lightning-fast greens, and a course architecture that demands precision, creativity, and composure under the most intense pressure in golf.
For fantasy golf players, this means the stats that predict Augusta success are different from the stats that matter everywhere else. Here’s what the numbers actually say.
Strokes Gained: Approach-the-Green
This is the single most predictive stat for Masters performance. Augusta’s greens are so severely contoured that the difference between a good approach shot and a great one can be three or four putts. Players who consistently hit the ball close from the fairway - and more importantly, to the correct portion of the green - have a massive advantage.
Year after year, the leaders in Strokes Gained: Approach show up on the Augusta leaderboard. When evaluating your Fantasy Tiers picks, prioritize players who rank in the top 20 on tour in this metric. It is not a coincidence that the game’s elite approach players - Scheffler, Morikawa, Schauffele - are perpetual Masters contenders.
Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green
Augusta’s greens are some of the fastest and most undulating in golf. Missing the green in regulation isn’t automatically catastrophic - if you know how to get up and down from the collection areas. Players who are elite around the greens can save par from positions that would cost others bogey.
This stat is often overlooked by casual fantasy players who focus exclusively on driving and approach. Don’t make that mistake. The Masters is won and lost in the short game.
Driving Accuracy
This might surprise you given how wide Augusta’s fairways appear on television. But hitting the fairway at Augusta isn’t about avoiding rough - it’s about positioning. Augusta rewards players who find specific portions of the fairway that open up the correct approach angle to each pin. Missing the fairway doesn’t always result in a penalty shot, but it almost always results in a more difficult approach.
Driving accuracy matters more in the final two rounds when pin positions become more aggressive and the margin for error on approaches shrinks significantly.
Par 5 Scoring
Augusta has four par 5s and they are reachable in two shots for virtually every player in the field. The Masters is, in many ways, a par 5 contest. Players who birdie all four par 5s every round separate themselves quickly. The best Masters performances in history have been built on dominant par 5 scoring.
When evaluating Fantasy Tiers picks, check par 5 scoring average. Players who consistently go low on par 5s on tour tend to do the same at Augusta.
Putting on Fast Greens
This one is harder to isolate in the stats, but it matters enormously. Augusta’s putting surfaces are unlike anything players see during the regular season. Speed, break, and the ability to lag putt from distance without leaving yourself a treacherous comeback putt all matter.
Look for players who perform well on the PGA Tour’s fastest greens - particularly at events like the Honda Classic (PGA National) or TPC Sawgrass, which offer some of the most challenging putting surfaces on tour.
Putting It All Together for Fantasy Tiers
Here’s a quick checklist for evaluating any Fantasy Tiers pick at the 2026 Masters:
- Top 25 on tour in Strokes Gained: Approach - the most important filter
- Strong par 5 scoring average - Augusta rewards birdie conversion on the reachable holes
- History at Augusta - course experience matters. First-timers rarely win
- Current form - who is playing well heading into Masters week? Form in March and early April is a real indicator
- Putting on fast greens - check performance at premium putting venues earlier in the season
The players who check all five boxes in the 2026 field are the ones worth targeting in your Fantasy Tiers lineup. Use the stats. Trust the numbers. Augusta rewards preparation.
