The BMW Championship Breakdown
The PGA Tour is in the midst of their FedEx Cup Playoffs vying for the $18 million dollar top prize given out to the winner of next week’s Tour Championship. The players inside the Top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings after last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship will participate in this week’s BMW Championship. The players who are inside the Top 30 after this tournament completes will compete at East Lake in Atlanta next week.
The BMW Championship will be hosted by Olympia Fields Country Club just outside Chicago, Illinois. This same course hosted the 2020 edition of this event with Jon Rahm coming out on top over Dustin Johnson in a playoff. It was also the site of Jim Furyk’s lone major championship victory at the 2003 U.S. Open. Olympia Fields sets up as a par 70 and stretches out 7,366 yards. There are only two par 5s on this course which limits the opportunities for birdies. Rahm and Johnson finished that week at only 4 under par for the week. This course will challenge all fascists of a golfer's game.
Tier Picks For The BMW Championship
Tier 1
- Scottie Scheffler
- Rory McIlroy
- Jon Rahm
- Patrick Cantlay
- Viktor Hovland
- Xander Schauffele
- Tyrrell Hatton
- Rickie Fowler
Pick: Patrick Cantlay - This pick may surprise some but did you know he’s won the BMW Championship in back to back years? He did that on two different courses. Patrick nearly won last weekend in Memphis falling in a playoff to Lucas Glover. Hard to ignore him even being around all these great golfers in this group.
Tier 2
- Max Homa
- Brian Harman
- Wyndham Clark
- Tony Finau
- Jason Day
- Collin Morikawa
- Tommy Fleetwood
- Russell Henley
Pick: Max Homa - I think the popular pick in this level will be Tommy Fleetwood. He has been as hot as anyone else on the PGA Tour except for failing to get a win. I like Homa especially seeing that he’s improved his finish in each of his last 4 starts. He’s gone 21st, 12th, 10th and 6th last weekend in Memphis. I feel like he’s a snake in the grass who could come up and win the whole thing.
Tier 3
- Matt Fitzpatrick
- Jordan Spieth
- Keegan Bradley
- Tom Kim
- Sam Burns
- Sungjae Im
- Corey Conners
- Denny McCarthy
Pick: Corey Conners - You have to think that this course is a perfect fit being that it’s a long Par 70. He ranks Top 20 in Tee to Green, Off the Tee and Approach on the season. The smaller greens will benefit him because while he lands on the green, most everyone else will be scrambling. He’s also got 2 Top 10s and another Top 20 in his last 4 starts.
Tier 4
- Cam Young
- Hideki Matsuyama
- Justin Rose
- Emiliano Grillo
- Si Woo Kim
- J.T. Poston
- Byeong Hun An
- Eric Cole
Pick: Emiliano Grillo - While everyone has been talking about the turnaround of Lucas Glover, what Grillo has done since the mid-point of the season has been amazing to watch. He won at the Charles Schwab in early May and has 4 Top 20 finishes in his last 5 starts which includes last weekend in Memphis. Grillo ranks Top 50 in both Tee to Green and Approach on the season.
Tier 5
- Sepp Straka
- Sahith Theegala
- Harris English
- Cam Davis
- Taylor Moore
- Lee Hodges
- Brendon Todd
- Andrew Putnam
Pick: Lee Hodges - This is a bit of a boom or bust play but I just love the way this guy is playing right now. I think you will get some low ownership on him as well. In his last 4 starts, he has a 12th, Missed Cut, 1st (First PGA Tour victory), and 31st. While the 31st doesn’t sound impressive, he started 68-65 before shooting a 72 on Saturday which derailed his week. For the season, he ranks Top 70 in Tee to Green, Approach, Off the Tee, and Putting. I love his upside, especially knowing he’ll play all 4 rounds this weekend.
Tier 6
- Chris Kirk
- Nick Taylor
- Adam Schenk
- Lucas Glover
- Seamus Power
- Adam Hadwin
- Adam Svensson
- Patrick Rodgers
Pick: Lucas Glover - This was the easiest pick of the 6. There is no way you can fade the hottest player on the PGA Tour right now. He has won back to back events and sits at 4th in the FedEx Cup standings. Oh and he had 3 more Top 10 finishes in his 4 previous starts. Glover is trying to make a late season push to make the Ryder Cup team and it’ll be hard for Zach Johnson to ignore him after this run.
