In major wind years, the 12th hole scoring average spikes dramatically. Players who handle wind well - who commit to a shot and trust their read even when the flags are sending mixed signals - have a genuine edge here.

Firm and Fast vs. Soft and Receptive

Augusta in firm, dry conditions is a completely different test than Augusta after rain. When the course is firm and the greens are at their fastest, approaches need to be landed short and fed to the pin - or placed in specific areas of the green that allow the ball to release to the hole. Aggressive, high-spin players who try to attack pins directly find that the greens reject their approach.
